*If DCSD’s mill levy override tax was equal to Cherry Creek School District’s, it would provide close to $100 million dollars in additional revenue for DCSD PER YEAR! This disparity in funding is creating a serious problem for all of us in the business of educating kids in DCSD.
This was just one of many concerning financial facts presented at Tuesday night’s District Accountability Committee’s (DAC) quarterly meeting at Rocky Heights Middle School. Interim Superintendent, Erin Kane, walked us through a very informative presentation about the serious funding challenge facing Douglas County School District.
It is time for the citizens of Douglas County to come together and solve the funding challenge plaguing our district. I know I can count on the support of all LES parents to work with me towards the greater good. Please join us for further budget conversations at our next SAC meeting 3/13 4:30-5:30
*Being academically successful may come easy to some students, but for most it takes persistence, practice, and perseverance. Frankly, it takes GRIT. What is GRIT? Our teachers were presented this video and I would like for you to take a moment to share Angela Lee Duckworth: Grit: The power of passion and perseverance. Thank you for joining us in the journey of developing the whole child and ensuring they learn how to have a growth mindset, fail to learn and preserver through their educational career.
*PARCC/CMAS is fast approaching. Have you every visited School view or the other sites that compare schools? Do you know how these grades are obtained? You guessed it through state mandated testing. After listening to many parents share their worries about testing, I would like to take the time to share a few important points.
We love our school and know that we are the best in DCSD, however we are a public school in the state of Colorado that is mandated to take PARCC/CMAS. This tool is used to hold schools accountable to ensure that every student is getting the education they deserve. When we have a large population of students excused from these assessments it does impact our rating/scores and the gap between our school and other schools widens. Parents and students are powerful stakeholders. Students are way more than just a score, but we, their educators, need to know if we are guiding them to master standards and academic content, and the test helps us to know if we are on the right track. I encourage you to take the time to research PARCC/CMAS. Ask yourself, is excusing my student from an assessment that helps teachers ensure their curriculum is allowing students to master grade level content and to show if a school is meeting expectations and providing a quality education the right choice? I will of course support your decision, but wanted to ensure everyone had the facts on how this impacts our school.
