Larkspur News!

February 5, 2018

Dear Parents,

We have received a number of inquiries recently regarding the attendance policy at Larkspur Elementary and would like to take this opportunity to share with you why your child’s school attendance matters.  We thank you, in advance, for taking the time to read this information and give the invitation to you to come to us at any time to discuss any particulars of your child’s attendance record!  We are here to help you help your child succeed!

Here at LES, we have been in the process of building the attendance program which brings us back into compliance by implementing the State and District requirements.  We have been implementing these structures for a couple of years and understand that many of you do not have a clear understanding of why things are the way they are!

Basic attendance policies which you should understand:

  1. You should ALWAYS sign your student “in and out” on our Student Check In Log at the front desk which includes the student’s name, time in or time out, the reason for the Tardy or Early Leave and your signature.  This is not optional.

  2. Your child’s attendance is recorded by the minute as reflected in this log.

  3. ALL minutes absent are accruing and will accumulate into full days missed if you regularly arrive late or check your child out early.  Please make every effort to minimize the number of tardies and early leaves for your child as it impacts their entire classroom!

  4. You should ALWAYS contact the attendance line or the front office if your child will be absent for any reason, regardless of whether or not you notified their teacher.

  5. PERSONAL TIME OFF IS CONSIDERED UNEXCUSED!  Again, regardless of whether or not you notified the teacher or front office in advance.

  7. You should ALWAYS provide a doctor’s note for any medical appointment when your child returns to school.

  8. It is documented whether you provided a doctor’s note or not--please note that “Excused” absences for “Dr. appointments” can become “Unexcused” without documentation.

  9. Personal vacations during instructional time in the school year are ALWAYS considered UNEXCUSED!  (Regardless of prior notification to the teacher or the front office).

  10. A new school year does not automatically mean that you have a “clean slate” as it regards attendance.  If you are receiving communications from us, your attendance patterns are cumulative and all years are taken into consideration when you get to Exhibit C which is an Attendance Contract.

  11. Once on an Attendance Contract, you continue, year by year, on this contract and do not start over!

  12. Your student is only permitted to have 8 Tardies/school year.  After you pass 8, they are considered UNEXCUSED TARDIES without medical documentation.

  13. The first communication you receive will be an email.  Please take this seriously and make appropriate changes to attendance patterns as needed at this time!

  14. LES follows the State-mandated levels of communication as it regards attendance.  After the first email, you can expect “Exhibit A” which contains detailed attendance information and ways to help. Next is “Exhibit B” which includes additional detailed attendance information as well as a meeting with the principal.  After this comes “Exhibit C” which is when you will be asked to sign an Attendance Contract.  If absences continue without regard to the structures or plan set in place, the information has to be submitted to the Truancy Review Board, at which time it is out of our hands!

The Colorado Department of Education requires that we communicate the status of your child’s attendance under certain circumstances such as the following:

*If pattern of absences continues past the #10, communication will be sent at various levels based on the number of absences and the academic impact your child is facing.

Again, this is the “nuts and bolts” of why your child’s attendance matters!  Please feel free to contact me at any time as it regards your child’s attendance!

Thank you for taking the time to be informed!

Registrar/Attendance Secretary

Adopt a classroom

Is an amazing cause to help a classroom in need. Fall of 2017, Burnett Elementary was devastated by the hurricane that hit southern Texas. Larkspur is excited to help the children in Mrs. Chavez's second grade class! Please remember to send in your donations by February 15th. We greatly appreciate your support!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!
